![]() Having grown up in Montreal’s Notre-Dame-de-Grâce borough, John said he never thought he’d one day own a cow. “It’s been really difficult to go to the grocery store and to look at meat without thinking of Olive, and so we’ve really made an effort to go vegetarian and maybe someday vegan as well,” her father added. “Me and my dad really like being with Olive, so we decided that we don’t want to eat meat anymore,” Zoe said. Photo by Allen McInnis / Montreal Gazette Zoe Serrati visits Olive, a calf she and her father rescued and brought to Monkey Spaces, north of Montreal. “We’re going to take care of her, give her what she needs,” she said.Ī series of happenstance events over the summer not only saved Olive’s life twice over - first when she was taken to 4-H, then when Zoe and John adopted her - but also the lives of several other farm animals. Trudeau said when she accepts an animal, the sanctuary becomes its home for life. “We’re so grateful to Nancy and to Monkey Spaces because cows can live for 20 years, and they eat a lot, and she’s made a tremendous commitment,” John said. Zoe and John try to make the two-hour trip to the farm a few times per month so Zoe can spend quality time with Olive and help feed her bottles of milk.
